Godfried Donkor: Story of a London Township

Mudhut

17 January  - 14 March 2009

SPACE is pleased to present a major new commission by Godfried Donkor.

In Story of a London Township a myriad of shelters address and re-assess cultural perceptions and clichés inherent to these forms. The Mud Huts will be accompanied by textiles, pastiches of traditionally designed African rugs, castings and models.

Dominating the central gallery space, a large corrugated steel construction will be adorned with two large plastic rugs. Using a combination of British and African folklore imagery they will be constructed using recyclable materials and will also adorn the floors the Mud Hut outdoors and the shelter made from corrogated cardboard in the second gallery space.

An additional display of a selection of these rugs will create a blue, white and red arrangement of symbolic imagery interwoven with recognisable slogans from London Tourism campaigns.

A rudimentary icon of architecture and symbol of shelter, Donkor’s Mud Huts will initiate spatial dialogues between the different histories and purposes of these structures. A metaphor for community solidarity, the mud hut will house a series of events throughout February including discussions, debates, screenings, drawing and storytelling workshops.

Godfried Donkor's practice has seen his work exhibited around the world. Past projects include the group exhibitions 'Around the World in 80 Days' at the ICA, London (2006), 'Pin Up' at the Tate Modern, London (2004) and 'Authentic/Excentric' at the Venice Biennale, Italy (2001). His recent exhibition in Nottingham's New Art Exchange 'Lace & Slavery' perpetuated Godfried's work examining the histories of African and Imperial conflict and transformation.

Godfried Donkor lives and works in London.
