Open Call: The Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki, Saastamoinen Foundation and SPACE Residency Programme 2018/2019
InProcess
Residency: 17 Sep – 11 Dec 2018
Application Deadline: Mon 16 Apr 2018
The Academy of Fine Arts of The University of the Arts Helsinki and SPACE Art + Technology in partnership with the Saastamoinen Foundation are seeking applications from MFA-alumni of the Academy of Fine Arts to participate in the InProcess residency programme in London. The three-month residency is hosted by SPACE. Emerging artists of any age who are MFA-alumni of the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki are invited to apply for the residency.
The InProcess Residency is conceived as a period of development, immersion and critical investigation. Practitioners will be selected in recognition of their proposal’s compatibility with the critical and experimental nature of the three-month residency structure, where the focus is on process over product.
InProcess will focus on liminal states existing between online and offline experiences, between artificial and natural spaces. Deriving from the Latin limen, the term liminal can be defined as intermediate between two states, conditions, or regions; transitional or indeterminate.
The programme will focus on exploring the potentials of these spaces to disrupt preconceived perceptions of categorization, further allowing for the emergence of new ideas and realities that exist between the physical and the digital domain.
Submissions are welcomed from practitioners whose work engages with these ideas.
The selected artist will receive:
- A travel allowance from Finland to the UK
- Three-month accommodation
- 24-hour studio and equipment access
- A stipend of £2400
- A production allowance of £1000
- Curatorial support and programming opportunities
- General support, advice and networking opportunities
To apply, applicants must submit the following:
- 1 x Proposal for new project or production to be developed or completed during the residency period (max 750 words)
- 1 x Artist CV
- 1 x Proposal for an artist-led workshop to investigate their subject collaboratively
- Examples of previous work (max 15 images; max 4 video links; max 1 PDF)
- Full contact details (including telephone, email, mobile number and address)
Evaluation Criteria
The InProcess Residency is conceived as a period of development, immersion and critical investigation. Practitioners will be selected in recognition of their proposal’s compatibility with the critical and experimental nature of the three-month residency structure, where the focus is on process over product. The applicants don’t necessarily need to have any earlier experience of combining art and technology but they are expected to describe in the application what kind of technology they are planning to exploit.
Selection Process
The selection will be done in May 2018 by the jury nominated together by the Academy of Fine Arts and the SPACE and confirmed by the Saastamoinen Foundation. The members of the jury are: Programme Director Manick Govinda, (SPACE, London), curator, researcher and producer Stella Sideli (London / Palermo) and Lecturer Tuomo Rainio (Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki).
