An exhibition that examines the creative process and the critical inner voices that both help and hinder art and life.

Karen Davies’ work is about the artistic process and how and why we make. She is interested in the labour involved in an artist’s practice; as with many artists, she runs a full-time job, as well as making her own work. During 2020, Karen began to write messages to herself during lockdown which resulted in the ongoing Notes to Self series. This process uncovered a new way of working and the acknowledgement of the often hidden text-based element of her practice. Initially conceived as an Instagram project, this is the first time Notes to Self is being shown in public.

Notes to Self and Notes to Plants have been included in the recently launched Vitamin Txt: Words in Contemporary Art, published by Phaidon.

Karen Davies is Head of Artist Development at SPACE and runs SPACE Advice Bureau.
