Broadgate Stories 2013

A group of young people from Hackney have created audio content while learning the technical secrets of making an innovative smart phone app at SPACE.

Broadgate Stories is a GPS triggered audio guide to the iconic contemporary architecture of Broadgate, the City of London business district surrounding Liverpool Street Station. It builds on an original project developed by SPACE in Broadgate Stories 2012 , providing next level audio content and technology skills to a whole new group of participants.

During the project the participants met some of the most exciting people and businesses in the area, at Google Campus, Greenlight Digital and The Vortex sound studios, to find out the variety of opportunities available to them. They talked to leading architects, designers, planners and Broadgate managers to gain insights into the vision for the area. They worked with professional poets, writers and musicians to develop their own creative content.

The app plays a rich narrative of raps, poetry and soundscapes. Use it at Broadgate and content will trigger as you stand near featured buildings or artworks. Or listen section by section away from the area via the internet.

It is available on iOS, Blackberry and Android platforms.

The programme helps young people take the next step towards securing jobs and further training in and around East London's growing 'Tech City' and creative industries.

Everyone was offered work experience opportunities on completion of the project, plus participants gained their Arts Award qualification, Bronze level. Towards this they built and populated a blog with reports, audio and photography.

SPACE worked with Ignite Creative to provide media training and create the app.

The programme was generously sponsored by British Land, with support from Broadgate management.
