Transition Projects, The Look

Standing in opposition to John Berger’s 1970s term ‘the gaze’ which describes how women are presented to be viewed as passive objects in advertising and European art. Eschewing too ‘the male gaze’ used by film theorist Laura Mulvey as a critique of traditional representations of women in cinema. Our ‘Look’ is altogether more ambiguous. It represents an active presentation and appraisal of appearance, a purposeful re-becoming strategised through taking control, accumulating knowledge, sourcing, scheming and daydreaming.
A fresh look at looking.
Featuring work by Jacqueline Utley, Janet Sainsbury, Xingxin Hu, Jennifer Caroline Campbell, Alison Jones, Cathy Lomax and Katherine Allen.
