Projection (Butterfly) No.1, Layla Curtis
Projection (Butterfly) No.1 by Layla Curtis will be included in the forthcoming fundraising exhibition at Drawing Room London, opening on 16 April 2026. This marks the first cyanotype from this new body of work to be released for exhibition, representing an important milestone within the artist’s developing practice.
In 2025, the artist received DYCP funding from Arts Council England to support an in-depth exploration of the cyanotype process and the development of Archiving The Archive, a body of work inspired by a cartographic archive donated by a global publishing company.
Projection (Butterfly) combines a contact print of a drawing with a photogram of a sculpture. The work was created by placing a hand-drawn negative and a translucent sculpture onto paper coated with a photosensitive solution, before exposing it to ultraviolet light. This process allows drawing, sculpture and photography to intersect within a single image, reflecting the conceptual focus of the wider series.
The Drawing Biennial will culminate in an online auction opening at noon on 9 June 2026, with works available to purchase from a starting bid of £400.
