Interview with Clara Jo
A series of interviews with SPACE Art + Technology artists in residence
What were you doing in the year leading up to the residency?
I am normally based in Berlin, but spent last year in London on fellowship at the RA Schools, Royal Academy of Arts. I completed a short film that looked into museological imaging techniques, which fed in nicely to the work I am pursuing now at SPACE.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am preparing for my workshop at the White Building on 31 Jan: Generating Narratives Through Virtual Transcription. The event will open up my practice and invite participants to re-narrate histories embedded within object-based archives. Hopefully we will also touch upon the ethical consequences of digital surrogacy when reproducing data.
How have you found the residency so far?
It’s been a privilege to have the time and space to focus entirely on my research, as I anticipate these questions will remain unresolved in my work for quite some time. I’m looking forward to seeing how my time here will inform my future work.

Clara Jo’s recent film and sculptural installations work in conversation with sites implicated in revisionist histories. Her residency with SPACE takes place at The White Building, London’s centre for art, technology and sustainability. As an extension of her current practice, Jo is pursuing a new trajectory of research in interactive, virtual reality interfaces geared towards exhibition in public space. Her work has been featured in exhibitions and screenings at the Royal Academy of Arts (London), Akademie der Künste (Berlin), Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, White Columns (New York), the Swiss Institute (New York), and the Alliance Ethio-Française d’Addis-Abeba
