SPACE x Art Schools Studio Awards 2025

Aug 2025 – Feb 2026
SPACE Enfield, EN1

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s SPACE Studio Awards: Gala Hills, Rosa Klerkx, and SeungWon Jang. This year, the SPACE Studio Award offered three recent graduates from Chelsea College of Arts, RA Schools and Slade sole use of a large studio for six months in our brand new studios building in Enfield. They will also receive 1-2-1 mentoring with SPACE’s Head of Artist Development, Karen Davies, to support them in establishing their practice.

SPACE x Slade Studio Award: Gala Hills. “With my practice I wish to sew together historical research and childish imagination through a distinct visual language. I move between paper and canvas, indoor and outdoor sites of creation, urban and rural, the imagined and the pragmatic, in order to unlock new imagery, and uncover new methods. Examples of my historical research include an obsession with various outsider female figures, often sharing animalistic qualities, a study into the cultural significance of bears, and illustrating various myths told in the ancient Welsh Mabinogion. With this research I am seeking to develop an alternative logic, using intuition, curiosity, cognitive dissonance, tradition and anarchist ideals to create a space where I can work untethered by convention.”

SPACE X RA Schools Studio Award: Rosa Klerkx. “I work with video, performance, photography and sound. My current focus is on the boundary between individual and collective identity, and to examine disconnection, alienation, and the quiet ways people search for meaning and contact. Repeated elements are empty landscapes, overlooked interiors, people, and environments charged with absence. My work often inhabits a muted, desaturated aesthetic and incorporates sound works that evoke a sense of temporary dislocation.

This studio will allow me to start a new body of work, enabling me to reflect, walk, record, draw and experiment by working within a new context. I hope to further refine my photography and sound work, while also beginning research for a new series of videos.”

SPACE x Chelsea College of Arts Studio Award: SeungWon Jang. “Through my practice, I reimagine the relationship between individuals, their vulnerable bodies and habitats where they coexist. I frequently explore the hybrid operation of recontextualising motifs and narrative references in nature to contemporary discourse.

For upcoming projects, I plan to concentrate on digital projects, research, modular assembly using laser-cut components, and experimental painting. This award would offer me not only physical space but also stability which means an essential foothold for sustaining momentum beyond graduation. It would allow me to incorporate recent research and prepare my new practices and proposals.”
