Out of SPACE | Care S1, E2: TCB (Taking Care of Business)

Wed 4 August 2021

This episode of Out of SPACE’s Care series is all about Taking Care of Business or TCB – a phrase that we’ve swiped from Elvis Presley who used to present pieces of TCB jewellery to his entourage. As for TCB and artists, we are thinking of all those elements of admin that get put off but are a vital part of developing careers, and in some cases protecting livelihoods. Applying for funding, keeping records of artworks and sales, entering competitions, having the correct insurance, corresponding with galleries, curators and collectors, joining arts organisations and organising your own exhibition, are just some of the things that come to mind.

To discuss this important topic, Cathy is joined by artist and SPACE awardee Reman Sadani and a-n Artists Information Company CEO Julie Lomax.

Host
Cathy Lomax is a London-based artist, the founder of Transition Gallery and the editor of Arty and Garageland magazines. She is currently researching the role of makeup and artifice in the creation of the Hollywood female star image for a PhD at Queen Mary University of London. Cathy’s paintings and installations assimilate the seductive imagery of film, fame and fashion, juxtaposing it with personal narratives and the everyday. Her particular interests are femininity, masquerade and the way that popular culture is constructed, consumed and related to. In 2014 Cathy was an Abbey Painting Fellow at The British School at Rome and in 2016 she won The Contemporary British Painting Prize. Her 2017 solo exhibition The Blind Spot is profiled by Matt Price in The Anomie Review of Contemporary British Painting. Recent exhibitions include Star Bar, Broadway Cinema, Letchworth Garden City (ongoing), The Immaculate Dream, Collyer Bristow Gallery, London (2019) and Dear Christine, Vane Gallery, Newcastle (and touring) (2019).

Reman Sadani is a London-based, Iraqi, multidisciplinary artist. She was born in Yemen in 1995 and graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2018. Her moving image work often features narratives that are driven by a search for an exit, in which she traces the physical toll of this constant search, as well as the negotiation between the individual and the collective that plays out. Recent screenings and group exhibitions include, Arab Women Film Festival, Rio de Janeiro (2021), Modern Mondays, MoMA, New York (2021), Independent Iraqi Film Festival, London (2020) and Soundings, Raven Row, London (2019).
