New structure for AIR and SPACE under Art Services Grants Ltd
Following the formation of Art Services Grants Limited (ASG) as an umbrella charity (see Summary of an Open Meeting of AIR and SPACE Artists, 16 Nov 1975) there was a need for restructuring the existing S.P.A.C.E. Limited and A.I.R. Limited. Being a charity, ASG would take over the leases from SPACE so that rate relief could be claimed. ASG would promote fund raising on behalf of SPACE and AIR, would negotiate with architects, developers and others with a view to commissioning artists’ work and could further develop the block purchase of materials and equipment for artists. Growing pains ensued with many meetings and debates relating to staffing and organisational structure, and the role of staff and artists in decision making. Ambitions to expand to a new gallery were knocked back by lack of a clear financial basis.
