Michael Samuels, Erika Trotzig, Clinging on
Instability is growing across the world, as we cling to liberal norms, ideas and values. This is explored by 21 artists in a show titled Clinging On. These are physical, material or conceptual investigations of precariousness and the accompanying need to hold on. In an exhibition of wall based sculptures, which connects a feeling of uncertainty to the physical, works defy a gravitational pull or some internal force. They seem to leap off the wall or cling to it. Or perhaps the sculpture is on the precipice of dissolving or cracking, reaching for its original form. This logic may also work on a conceptual level, exploring how the familiar can morph into the strange. This exhibition is an attempt to create opportunities for reflection, change and resistance.
