Polly Townsend, Imagining Antartica: artists and writers on the frozen continent
Take a unique look at Antarctica through the eyes of artists, musicians and writers. Hear from speakers including guitarist and chair of Friends of Scott Polar Research Institute Steve Garrett, novelist and poet Katie Hale (author of The Edge of Solitude) and visual artist and former Scott Polar Research Institute-artist-in-resident Polly Townsend, all of whom have used the icy content as their muse.
We’ll ask why Antarctica has proved so inspiring to so many generations of creatives across music, visual art, film and literature, and explore the different ways in which it has been depicted in culture. In partnership with Friends of SPRI (who run the Artist and Musician in Residence scheme with the Royal Navy), we’ll ask why it matters so much that artists of all disciplines continue to visit and experience Antarctica in person.
