Hannah Skinner: David Troostwyk Bursary Award Winner 2018
SPACE welcomes Hannah Skinner, winner of this year's David Troostwyk Bursary Award which runs annually in partnership with Matt’s Gallery. Each year a bursary holder receives a rent-free studio for 12 months in a refurbished wing of Martello Street Studios, part of which formerly housed Robin Klassnik’s studio and later Matt’s Gallery. David Troostwyk was the first artist to show in Matt’s Gallery. The David Troostwyk Bursary Award is funded by the late artist’s estate, the trustees of which are Robin Klassnik and Barbara and Olivia Cavanagh.
As part of the prize, Hannah will exhibit at the new Camberwell Gallery at Camberwell College of Arts in November 2019.
Hannah says: “The David Troostwyk Bursary Award is an amazing opportunity and I feel very privileged to have it because it allows me to expand my ideas on a larger scale. The distinction between home and studio is very important to me because it allows me to have time away from the work to think critically about it. Over the next year, I want to use the studio to experiment with textiles, performance and video work.”

Hannah Skinner graduated from BA Sculpture at Camberwell College of Art in 2018. Her practice is strongly based around queerness, with her own sexuality informing an interest in queering objects and theories. In the future, she wants to create work centring queer content aimed at LGBTQA+ people. She says: “a lot of modern LGBTQA+ content lets queer people down by conforming to homonormative tropes that pander to heterosexual audiences".
