LCN Story: Photographer Nicola Morley

Nicola Morley‘s practice focuses on identity, place and time. “It is the everyday, the mundane that sparks my interest; the quirky rituals that we all employ, each one a trace of our reality, making us independently and collectively who we are,” she says. Her work is held in private collections and has been exhibited in shows across the world.

Here, Nicola talks about how the LCN programme sparked a new direction for her photography practice.

What new project are you introducing to your practice and why?
I am working in collaboration with an NGO-run street school in Delhi, India. Photofusion’s Becky Warnock, whom I met at an LCN workshop about collaborations, has given me invaluable advice. Listening to her experience within communities turned a cog in my head, enabling me to see how one could use photography to make a difference. We have stayed in touch and she has been tremendously supportive. It’s very exciting.

What was the main motivation behind your application to the LCN programme?
I wanted guidance in finding work in London as it is a minefield.

What is the most useful advice or tips you’ve been given on the programme so far?
It was from Richard at Photofusion who said “colour balance any prints that you are going to show”, plus all of his advice on papers. Zoe Whishaw encouraged me to sort out my website. Also to keep an open mind. You never know where it could lead you.

What plans do you have after participating with LCN?
It will be interesting to see where the collaboration in India takes me. I would like to use the experience to pursue similar projects elsewhere.
