Out of SPACE | Care S1, E1: Art and caring

Wed 21 July 2021

The first episode of Out of SPACE’s Care podcast series focuses on ‘art and caring’, that is, how to combine them and the impact that one has upon the other.

A carer is defined as a ‘family member or paid helper who regularly looks after a child or a sick, elderly, or disabled person.’ We are going to focus on caring for children and in particular how having and caring for children shapes art making and the development of an art career. To discuss this we have two guests who are both artist-parents: Katherine Tulloh and Emily Speed.

Host

Cathy Lomax is a London-based artist, the founder of Transition Gallery and the editor of Arty and Garageland magazines. She is currently researching the role of makeup and artifice in the creation of the Hollywood female star image for a PhD at Queen Mary University of London. Cathy’s paintings and installations assimilate the seductive imagery of film, fame and fashion, juxtaposing it with personal narratives and the everyday. Her particular interests are femininity, masquerade and the way that popular culture is constructed, consumed and related to. In 2014 Cathy was an Abbey Painting Fellow at The British School at Rome and in 2016 she won The Contemporary British Painting Prize. Her 2017 solo exhibition The Blind Spot is profiled by Matt Price in The Anomie Review of Contemporary British Painting. Recent exhibitions include Star Bar, Broadway Cinema, Letchworth Garden City (ongoing), The Immaculate Dream, Collyer Bristow Gallery, London (2019) and Dear Christine, Vane Gallery, Newcastle (and touring) (2019).

Guests
Katherine Tulloh is a painter and experimental film maker who lives and works in East London and has a SPACE studio in Hackney Wick. She has two daughters aged 10 and 19 and a husband aged 54. To fund her practice, she teaches art to children and runs workshops in schools. Recent projects have included a two-person lockdown exhibition with Felicitas Aga which was inspired by Bavarian folk tales and held in an online space; and Interior Day (2020) based on images from the film Nathalie Granger, a 1972 French drama film directed by Marguerite Duras where two women hang around the house together, with their kids, which was accompanied a pamphlet by her sister on Duras’ cooking.

Emily Speed is an artist, educator, coach, and advocate for artists’ rights, based in the North West. Her practice spans drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image and performance and it explores the relationship between architecture and the human body. Speed has shown her work at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Tate St Ives, Laumeier Sculpture Park in St Louis and Fort Worth Contemporary Art, among others. She is currently making a new work for Tate Liverpool, which will open in September 2021.

Out of SPACE is a new podcast series featuring artists from across SPACE’s studios. Artists are in conversation with writers, critics and art professionals, offering a closer look into what happens behind closed studio doors. Out of SPACE is hosted by artist / curator Cathy Lomax. Over the next 8 episodes we will be exploring the theme of care from multiple viewpoints, ranging from artists and parenthood, to caring about the community and about the work itself.
