School’s (Not Quite) Out for Summer 2013

The Summer School engages children and teachers who are involved with their local schools’ own summer holiday programmes.

Over 130 children took part in workshops at The White Building led by selected SPACE artists, each representing a different discipline and way of seeing the world. The newly opened Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park became a classroom right on the White Building’s doorstep. Children, teachers and artists walked in to the Park over the bridge to explore the biodiversity, architecture, technology and sustainability together.

The artists developed a programme of workshops that fed into their own practice but also was linked to the Park. They were: Lawrence Lek, a sculptor and installation artist drawing on architectural structures; Jeanette Barnes, who creates thickly layered drawings of the urban environment; Codasign Tracy and Hobbs, two artists working in the areas of animation and lit sculpture who collaborate on site-specific animated installations and community projects.

Artists in SPACE’s nearby Britannia Works and Bridget Riley buildings hosted visits, talks and short discovery sessions in their studios, providing a unique creative learning experience for children and teachers.
