SPACE buys Martello Street studios

Martello Street

SPACE is thrilled to announce that we are now the proud owner of our Martello Street studios in central Hackney, which we have leased since 1971.

Keeping artists in the city is a key priority for us, and acquiring Martello Street studios means that we can increase stability not just for our artists at Martello, but for all our artists across our portfolio of 20 buildings.

Martello is particularly important considering we moved into the building in 1971, so it has a very special place in our hearts and history. The building houses 50 studios, and many more artists. Over the years it has been home to artists working in experimental filmmaking and performance. Early tenants included Bruce Lacey whose young family lived in the caretaker cottage, Cosey Fanni Tutti and Genesis P-Orridge who arrived from Hull in 1974, and Robin Klassnik, whose studio in 1979 became the first Matts Gallery.

Over half a century later we can finally call it ours!
