SPACE Patrons & Friends Bursary 2016: Gonçalo Birra
Gonçalo Birra has been awarded the first SPACE Patrons & Friends Studio Bursary in partnership with Chelsea College of Art and will have access to a free studio at SPACE’s new studio site Southwark Old Town Hall. The bursary runs until October 2017.
The bursary was created to support exceptional artists at a crucial time in the development of their practice. Its aim is to reduce the impact of cost on success through provision of free workspace within a supportive studio environment.
Gonçalo Birra (b. Lisbon, 1992) lives and works in London and has recently completed an MA degree at Chelsea College of Arts. His practice is deeply informed by theory and proposes to argue against givens and social constructs within contemporary society. Navigating through assemblage, sculpture, digital and analogical approaches to image making and printing, his work suggests scenarios of an absurd queered nature through anecdotal references to the domestic, the home and history. Gonçalo’s practice relies on the memories imprinted onto surfaces of things to deconstruct and reassemble failed accomplishments and broken narratives of successfulness and futurity.
