Interview with Stine Deja
A series of interviews with SPACE Art + Technology artists in residence
What were you doing in the year leading up to the residency?
Before starting the residency, I had been working on a solo show Hard Core, Soft Bodies that I showed in Dresden at the end of last year. Since March 2018 I’ve also been working on a big commission from the Danish Art Fund to make a permanent art installation within 20 changing rooms at a new sports hall complex in Denmark.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m continuing my research that began at SPACE, bringing to life some of the ideas I had during the residency. Other than that, I’m preparing for some upcoming group shows and finalising the commission project that I have been working on for the past year.
How have you found the residency so far?
Doing this residency (my first ever) has been such a great start to my year and my research. Discussing research with peers and having a mentor has been a really valuable experience. It feels really great to be surrounded by friendly and inspired people and given time and space to explore my interests and develop a whole new body of work.
What’s coming next?
I’m presenting work in some group shows in Russia, Denmark, Germany, New York and Italy this summer, so right now I’m preparing for that. I’ve also started thinking about a new solo show for 2020. Since doing all this research I’ve had a growing desire to go to Arizona to visit Alcor and experience the desert – so I also hope to make that happen!
