1975 – 1978
AIR Gallery opened as an extension of the Artist Information Registry. The idea was that it should give a further platform for artists’ work. Each exhibition was selected by a panel of three AIR artists and an invited outsider.
The first show included Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Nat Gooden, James Griffin, Harvey Hood, Michael Kenny, Stuart Mealing, Richard Rome, Kerry Trengrove, Shelagh Wakeley and Rhonda and David Whitehead – the outside selector was Guardian critic Caroline Tisdall.
“Perhaps for the first time in Britain we are going to have an efficiently run non-commercial gallery managed by an artists’ co-operative.” (ref: Time Out review).
