In 1978, Lewisham council granted SPACE a 12 year lease on the derelict Riverdale Flour Mill in Molesworth Street. Tony Ford, the co-ordinator of Arts Services Grants Ltd (SPACE) said at the time, “12 artists will use the premises. They will be concerned with the visual arts such as painting and sculpture. It may also have the good spin-off effect of deterring vandalism. Part time artists will use the building at odd hours and someone should be there at most times.” Running costs were paid by the artists. Help with redecorations and repairs at the mill was given by the Arts Council of Great Britain and the Greater London Arts Association.
