The White Building was a 5 year partnership project between SPACE and the London Legacy Development Corporation. SPACE’s lease at The White Building ended November 2017 and all programmes then relocated to SPACE’s Mare Street HQ.
In the second half of 2010, SPACE won a competition to operate what became The White Building at Queen’s Yard, Hackney Wick, in partnership with the design team at the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC, now London Legacy Development Corporation/LLDC). Amidst rapid urban regeneration in the area, this was a key opportunity to facilitate a public platform for anchoring the creative community and bridging between the neighbourhood and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The White Building’s mission was to operate as a centre for creative support and to actively support and promote Hackney Wick and Fish Island as a hub for the area’s creative sector. SPACE developed the building as an open space for fearless experimentation at the ‘intersection of art, technology and sustainability’. Its key aim was to engage as many people as possible in these themes and in Hackney Wick, highlighting the role of artists and other creative and innovative people in the area.
